Reflections on Bruno Mars' Just The Way You Are Music Video

Yeah, this music video's puh-retty old, but I had to rewatch it recently as I was planning my lesson for an ESL student. She does this thing where she fills in the missing words I print out while listening to the song. Anyway, I was rechecking the lyrics for "Just the Way You Are" by watching the music video for the first time.

"Aw," I thought. "I want a boyfriend like that."

Here's the music video for you guys who want to watch it, so we're on the same page here:

I was passively watching the music video as I was checking the lyrics when it hit me:

THAT GIRL IN THE MUSIC VIDEO IS FREAKING PERFECT! She has a face FULL of makeup on, she clearly has had her hair done by professionals, she's wearing flattering clothes, she's got, like, THE perfect body any girl could ask for... ARE YOU KIDDING ME, MR. BRUNO MARS? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Sorry. *breathes in and breathes out*

Okay. I'm calm now.

But let me show you what I am talking about. Shall we take a look at a couple lines of the song to illustrate?

Oh, her eyes, her eyes make the stars look like they're not shinin'

Yeah. Thanks to pollution. Next.

Her hair, her hair falls perfectly without her tryin'

If I had hair that was professionally done every single morning, my hair would fall perfectly without my tryin' either.

etc.

And not only that. Bruno could have just used a normal-looking girl who just got out of bed, but no. He had to use a perfectly perfect model who's just basking in all of her perfect-ness. Even One Direction used gorgeous models for "What Makes You Beautiful". Being beautiful is what makes those models beautiful, thank you very much.

I dunno.

Maybe I'm feeling a little bitter because I look like poop today. But don't you girls agree? I mean, it's easy to sing about the girl being amazing just the way she is if she looks like THAT. Sigh. Life, man.

Seriously, though. I would be really happy if a male singer actually invited a normal non-model to star in his music video as he sings about how perfect she is although she may not think so.

It's time to petition something like this. Imagine how much this would lift the average teenaged girl's self esteem! Well, here's to hoping a music video with a normal girl will come out one day! *clinks glasses*

Buh-Bye Long Hair--8 Celebrities Who Literally Chopped Off Their Hair

Yeah, long hair can get pretty tiresome and heavy and oily and ugh. I totally understand when people want to chop their hair off. But the problem is that it's really hard to gather the courage to actually get a haircut. I JUST managed to cut my waist-length hair and now my hair comes up to a third of my back. Even saying good-bye to 15cm of hair was bad enough, but imagine those women in Hollywood who actually took a step further and are baring their necks for the world! The horror! But then again, these women are actually beautiful, so they don't really need hair to frame their faces to begin with. Humph.

Well, now that Jennifer Lawrence has got her new haircut (because her hair was waaaay too fried from dying it again and again for different roles, by the way), I guess it's time to list some celebrities who actually had the heart to sport a pixie haircut.

Say hello to the most recent addition to Team Short Hair: Ms. JLaw!

Charlize Theron

Can't I please look like Charlize? She's absolutely stunning.

Emma Watson

As much as I love Emma and her new hair, I kinda miss Hermione. *enter sad face* My entire childhood...

Vanessa Hudgens

She doesn't seem to like her short cut very much. She keeps adding extensions. Dunno what her problem is, she's be-u-tiful

Shailene Woodley

OMGOMGOMG! I SIMPLY CANNOT WAIT FOR THE FAULT IN OUR STARS!

Miley Cyrus

And... this haircut marked the demise of Miss Hannah Montana. *bows head*

Anne Hathaway

After:

Sigh. The sheer emotional intensity of her portrayal has Fantine has yet to be rubbed off my eyes. Can't believe she actually chopped off her beautiful hair for just, like, 30 minutes of a movie, though.

I just don't get it. I look like a man without my hair. But then again... These celebrities get the advantage of professional makeup artists. *wink*

Having Fun With As Little Money As Possible

1) Old-school sleepover

This is a perfect way to recapture the good old days, when everything was simple and crushing on some guy was the worst of your problems. Simply invite a couple of friends over, morph into your twelve-year-old selves and slip into a world of ‘truth or dare’, boys, and ‘would you rather’. You don’t need any money, maybe just a sufficient amount of girly movies or horror films, food and possibly some makeover stuff. The trick is to not plan the night out too much, as you don’t want the fun to seem forced.

2)Cooking/baking

You’d be surprised at the amount you could bake with just three or four ingredients that you probably already have lying around in the kitchen. You can either attempt to create something wonderful and edible, or try to come up with some of the grossest concoctions physically possible. Here is a simple biscuit/cookie recipe that you can adapt and basically go crazy with (makes about 30).

1. Whip together 200g softened butter with 200g caster sugar until fluffy.
2. Add one lightly beaten egg, and a few drops of vanilla extract and mix well (at this stage, you can add any other ingredients you may want, such as cocoa powder, dried fruit, etc).
3. Sift in 400g of plain flour, and combine everything until you have a ball of dough.
4. Place this in the fridge for half an hour, allowing it to solidify a little so you can then easily roll it out on a floured surface, till it is about 7mm thick.
5. Next, use cookie cutters of your choice to cut the dough into shapes. Lay these out on a tray lined with grease proof paper.
6. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4, for 10-15 minutes.
7. When the cookies are golden, remove them from the oven and place on a cooling rack for about 10 minutes.
8. In the meantime, you can make some icing by mixing together 75g of icing sugar with 1 ½ teaspoons of water (and a couple of drops of food colouring if required).
9. Once the cookies are cool, you can drizzle, smear the cookies in icing, or simply dunk them the bowl.
10. Let them set and decorate them however you wish, or simply enjoy them.

3) Cheap nights out

This one may require a little bit of money, but it does go a long way. It’s shocking how much is actually going on, that you may not be aware of, and concerts don’t have to be expensive. There are actually tons of small, unknown bands and musical acts out there and chances are their gigs are extremely cheap or even free to attend. Look online to find out if there are any small, intimate venues near you. Go on to their website, and see what’s occurring. You might even find that the most unlikely performances are the best ones, so don’t be afraid to venture outside of your musical preferences slightly. This is a great way to expand your tastes too.

4) Be one with nature

This is probably the cheapest option. With the presence of the Internet and various kinds of technology, many of us forget what the physical world is actually like. And no, following a nature blog on Tumblr doesn't provide you with your daily share of the world outside. Most of you don’t really have an excuse to not explore further than your bedroom. With GPS readily available on your phone, there is (supposedly) no real way of you getting completely lost and even if you do find yourself in an alien environment, finding your way out is all a part of the fun. You might even find yourself capturing some wonderful photos, not to mention, walking is a great way to catch up with friends. There are so many ways in which you can learn to appreciate nature, whether it means going to the beach, taking a long hike through the woods, building an igloo or simply reading a book under a tree.

The Le Teen Café Review Corner: Damselfly by Jennie Bates Bozic

Title: Damselfly
Author: Jennie Bates Bozic
Publisher: Jennie Bates Bozic LLC

Synopsis (via Goodreads):

In 2065, the Lilliput Project created Lina - the first six-inch-tall winged girl - as the solution to a worldwide energy and food crisis. Isolated in a compound amidst the forests of Denmark, Lina has grown up aware of only one purpose: learn how to survive in a world filled with hawks, bumblebees, and loneliness. However, on the eve of her sixteenth birthday, she discovers that she’s not the only teenager her size. Six 'Toms' were created shortly after Lina, and now her creators need to prove to the world that tiny people are the next logical step in human evolution. In other words, they need to prove that reproduction is possible.

Um. No thanks. Lina's already fallen in love with a boy she met online named Jack. Only he has no idea that thumbelina1847 could literally fit inside his heart.

When her creators threaten to hurt Jack unless she chooses a husband from among the ‘Toms’, Lina agrees to star in a reality TV series. Once the episodes begin to air, the secret of her size is out. Cut off from any contact with the outside world, Lina assumes Jack is no longer interested. After all, what guy would want to date a girl he can’t even kiss?

Slowly, very slowly, she befriends the six young men who see her as their only ticket to happiness. Perhaps she can make just one guy’s dream of love and companionship come true. But her creators have a few more twists in store for her that she never thought possible.

She’s not the only one playing to the cameras.

Review:

3/5

I was given Damselfly in exchange for an honest review, so here goes. Reading the synopsis and reviews in Goodreads gave me high hopes for this book, but unfortunately, I was a little disappointed.

The good: It's a BRILLIANT premise. I absolutely fell in love with the idea of little pixies and a reality TV series. Whoop! Who wouldn't be pulled into the book with a premise like that? And the plot was very exciting too. It kept me on the edge of my seat. The writing was beautiful. And the voice was one I could just click to as a teenager. As for the main character, Lina, when her rebellious side popped up (dying her dress black and her hair purple? You go girl!) I was totally rooting for her. She seemed like a cool person to read about. Someone who, even though she's stuck in Lilliput, will stand up for herself. The first three chapters were a little drawn out, but then when the action started, it was like BAM! I also loved the big twists Jennie managed to squeeze into the plot, so good job on that!

The bad: Things went downhill near the middle of the book. Lina started to get very weak. I get it that she had a reason to not rebel, but seriously? She's acting for the reality show just for a guy she has never ever met? I don't know... I'm not entirely against online dating, but how the heck is that the real thing? Even Lina said herself that being with Jack online wasn't anything like being with the Toms who actually had heat. And speaking of characters, I found myself disliking most of them. After Lina lost my affection, I couldn't find anyone to root for. I guess George (Lina's caretaker?) was a good character, I liked him, but he was missing for most of the book. I really loved Row (one of the Toms) while I was reading, but I found myself disliking him also. Sigh.

Overall: I really, really wanted to enjoy this book, but I found myself too distracted over the manipulative characters that I couldn't really fall in love with the book. It was a good book to read, and I had fun during the five hours poring over this book, but it's not one I would read again.

A Movie I'm Sooooo Looking Forward To: Ender's Game

Ever since I first heard that a movie version of Ender's Game was in the works. I've been going absolutely CRAZY trying to track down all the deets. I'm not a big sci-fi fan, but Ender's Game... OMG. Ender's Game was beyond amazing. Especially that twist at the very end. Omgomgomgomg. I won't give out any spoilers, but lemme say this. IT'S SO COOL!

And when the casting came out. I got even more excited. You won't believe what kind of AMAZING actors we're going to see on the big screen. The actors make me want to scream even more. It's just, ugh. I can't handle this. ENDER'S GAME, COME OUT ALREADY!

Asa Butterfield

Ender

First of all, huge fan. Ever since I first saw Nanny McPhee 2, he's been on my to-watch list. He's adorable and has the most beautiful eyes ever! And his voice! HIS VOICE IS SO DEEP. (sorry for all the extra caps. I'm just so freaking excited!)

Hailee Steinfeld

Petra

You might remember her from my previous blog post about the Romeo and Juliet remake and here she is again. Hailee's been working like crazy recently. She's an absolutely phenomenal actress and I cannot wait to see her as the amazing Petra!

Harrison Ford

Colonel Graff

Yup. You heard it right. The King of Sci-Fi stars in Ender's Game! Whooop! Talk about the best cast ever!

Viola Davis

Major Gwen

She was just incredible in the Help and no doubt she'll be amazing in Ender's Game too!

Abigail Breslin

Valentine

I personally haven't seen any of Abigail's movies since she was a little girl, so I'm really looking forward to see how much she and her acting's grown.

Ben Kingsley

Mazer

When I first heard that Ben will be playing the uh-mazing Mazer Rackham, I literally screamed. HE LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE I PICTURED MAZER WHEN READING THE BOOK!

Ugh. The cast really makes me want to cry. It's so perf.

Do you see why I'm so hecka excited?!
